Just A Tease

by Paul Siciliano

There is never a wrong way to call someone a slut, but there definitely is a right way.

Yes, yes been away far too long, but finally got around to purchasing the Colbys and will begin commentary soon.  Ideally, I will be finished before the reboot of Dynasty begins.  And, yes I will watch it.

Top Scenes - Sable vs. Alexis

by Paul Siciliano

Episode 214 - Tales of the Tape

There have been excellent diva rivalries on Dynasty. (And we will get to them.)  Alexis vs. Krystle being the most notable.  But there was Alexis vs. Dominique and even some minor ones like Claudia vs. Sammy Jo and Fallon vs. Sammy Jo.  I've decided to start with the rivalry between cousins Alexis and Sable that made Season 9 great.

Alexis finally met her match in Season 9 as Sable stormed into Denver to get revenge on her cousin for telling Jason that Monica and Miles were not his children.  Truth be told, Sable pretty much had Alexis on the ropes all season.  Of all the scenes between the two, I chose the one where Sable finally has Alexis beat (and Colby Co in her grasp) and is more than happy to share the good news.

Let's put aside that legally this is not how matters are done, this is just great camp and Stephanie Beacham and Joan Collins play it perfectly.  In an odd way, I felt that Joan Collins acting was much better with Beacham than with Linda Evans.  Alexis's facial expression when Sable and Monica barge in, is priceless (still not as awesome when Alexis was told to wear pastels in Season 8).  Also, Alexis's kicking of the chair and attempt to tear the ex parte order is comical.

What can be said about Beacham's portrayal of Sable.  Beacham gets the camp of the series and the utter ridiculousness of the dialogue.  The way she says "fascinating unpleasant things about Colby Co." is gold.  No one on the show delivered the lines better than Beacham.  And let's not forget the laugh at the end which is aided by a nice diva pose.

It is a shame that Sable showed up in Season 9 when ABC was prepared to kill the show (and put it against the ratings powerhouse of Cheers).  Had Sable arrived in Season 8, maybe the show could have lasted a few more seasons.  Then again, America may have just moved on.  Nonetheless, the Sable vs. Alexis battle made for a very entertaining send off to the series.

Top Scenes - Claudia on The Roof

by Paul Siciliano

Episode 37 - The Roof:

Nothing makes good camp than some ridiculous surprise or twist, especially when the premise is pretty far-fetched to begin with.  During Season 2, our favorite emotionally fragile Claudia had improved after Matthew took Lindsay and ran off.  Unfortunately for Claudia, she was being used by Cecil who was aware that Matthew and Lindsay had died in South America but kept her hoping that she would be reunited with her daughter.

When Claudia learned the truth, she began to regress.  After failing to killing to Cecil Colby, Claudia just hung around the mansion pining for Lindsay who was not a baby in her mind.  It was perfect since there was a new baby in the mansion - Little Blake, Fallon and Jeff's son.

Part of the Season 2 cliffhanger saw the kidnapping of L.B. and many possible culprits, including Claudia.  It is strange that Claudia was still regarded as a suspect since she spoke with Jeff and Fallon after the baby went missing.  Is Claudia that clever?  Maybe she was because we see Claudia checking into a hotel with a baby in her arms.

After the Carringtons assume Claudia is the kidnapper, they go to the press and the hotel owner immediately calls the police.  Claudia notices this and decides to take her baby and hang out on the roof.  Why?  The police get no where with Claudia but Blake does.  Just as it looks like Blake is about to get Claudia to turn over the baby, an incompetent police officer is seen by Claudia approaching her and she trips, causing the baby to go off the roof.

How awesome is that.  There is this baby tumbling to its death.  The family is hysterical as they believe Little Blake is falling to his death.  But, Claudia didn't have Little Blake.  No, she had a doll wrapped in Little Blake's blanket.  Great!  Seriously, is the show going to kill off a baby like that?  Poor Claudia was so far off the reservation that she treated a doll as her daughter.  (Where did she get the doll?)  And no one noticed that she had a doll.  It was the quietest baby ever.

After the hysteria subsides, Fallon comes to the realization that someone else has her baby and she passes out into Blake's arms.  Meanwhile, Claudia is passed out into the arms of the negotiator.  I mean, she did lose her doll.  Great.  Nothing like blending over dramatic acting, with a campy sub-plot.  And, to top it off, we are still left to wonder who has Little Blake.

What's Next

by Paul Siciliano

After about 18 months, I have finally finished my reviews of all 217 episodes of Dynasty, so what do I plan on doing now?  Granted, there are still some screen captures for Season 9 that need to be done.  Also, the Colbys comes out on DVD next month so that will be added to the page.  I am also considering doing a similar review of Empire since it kind of is the black Dynasty.

At the same time, I would like to further explore Dynasty as a cultural phenomenon and as an example of like in the United States during the Reagan administration.  Had I decided to get my PhD in history (instead of JD) I seriously would have considered writing my dissertation on the program and how it reflected American life and values in the 1980s.  [Side note, my honors thesis in college did a study of the disco culture and how it influenced the gay liberation movement in the U.S. in the 1970s.]  Instead, I will explore some of the themes and ideas here - time willing.  I also will do scene analysis and some other fun stuff involving the show.

I hope that I can post on a regular basis and add some depth to a program that really was symbolic of the U.S. during the 80s and had worldwide impact.
