the colbys episode 36 - “Reaching out”

I wonder in real life if people have nightmares that coincide with problems in their lives, and talk in their sleep about it. Monica has a nightmare that a Nurse Adrienne and a Doctor Cash tell Monica that she never had a baby, while a teen Monica swears they are keeping it from her. Nothing can happen in the Colby Mansion without Sable finding out and she comforts Monica. Monica is not prepared to tell Sable what is the problem and when Sable asks Jason to intercede, Jason refuses and does not tell Sable about Cash and Monica’s affair years ago.

Monica tenders her resignation to Jason and Jason refuses it. Now, Jason does not care that Monica is uncomfortable working with Cash - she just needs to deal with it. If Miles and Jeff can work together, so can Monica and Cash. Monica is not thrilled with Jason’s coldness regarding the matter but will follow her father’s wishes. Of course, Jason suspects something is up and speaks with Cash. Jason wants Cash to resolve matters with Monica. Lucky for Jason, Cash wants a similar resolution. Just wait until Jason finds out what that is.

Monica is not Jason’s only concern. Connie’s banker in New York calls Jason to tell him that Connie requested $2 million in cash to be wired to her in India. Jason finds that strange and is concerned that Connie may be in trouble. He gets his best men in India to try and track Connie. Matters become stranger when he receives a cable, supposedly from Connie, requesting Jason to come to India to help her. Jason suspects much more is happening since Connie (or anybody) would never send such a cable. Normal people would call.

At least Jason has pretty much washed his hands clean of Bliss and Kolya. He helped Kolya to defect and moved him into the mansion - there is nothing more he can or wants to do. The Soviets are already annoyed with him but they have rescheduled another meeting with Jason in Toronto regarding I.M.O.S. and Jason is not going to jeopardize that meeting. Kolya is unable to reach Anna and his mother in Russia but this is an issue that Kolya and Bliss need to solve. Kolya eventually receives a call from Anna who tells him that the Soviets are treating her and their mother well because she is regarded as a hero for returning to the Soviet Union. In fact, they may even give them a television (so they can watch Dynasty of course). Anna is unable to put their mother on the phone and quickly hangs up on Kolya. Kolya suspects she said what she said against her will and Kolya is correct in that suspicion.

The whole Fallon/Jeff/Miles/Channing thing takes some odd turns. Frankie tries to warn Fallon about Channing but Fallon believes that Channing is a friend who completely supports her. Fortunately for Channing, she overhears that conversation so she knows where she stands with Fallon and Frankie. Channing is then paid a visit by her Uncle Lucas’s lawyer (interesting side note - Channing calls him Sam but the closing credits refer to him as Billy Joe Erskine) who offers Channing shares in Lucas’s publishing company in exchange for her continued spying on Jason. Wait, Channing hadn’t stopped spying on Jason? Channing wants nothing to do with Lucas’s schemes. Later, she tells Miles that she was wrong at the cabin. She really hopes Fallon’s baby is Miles’s and she will love it and raise it as her own. I'm not sure if Channing is sincere about this, but I find her entertaining.

Just as Channing has had a change of heart, Sable tries to convince Miles to make things work with Channing. Even if Miles is the father of Fallon’s baby, no court will give him custody unless he is happily married. That means Miles needs to hide his feelings for Fallon, engage in no more manipulation to see Fallon, and create a loving and stable marriage with Channing. Miles agrees.

It is rare when Frankie takes a dig at Sable, but Frankie could not wait to tell Sable that Jason has created another trust of $10 million - this time for L.B. Does L.B. really need the money? I mean this kid will be an heir to Colby Enterprises, Denver Carrington and Colby Co. Sable does not like it that Frankie’s family is growing while she has yet to give a grandchild to Jason. She expresses her concern with Zach, who, wouldn’t you know it, tells Sable that she actually does have a grandson - Cash Cassidy’s boy. Cash thought Zach could do him no damage since Monica knew the truth - Cash was wrong.

Sable is finally able to talk to Monica to find out if it is true. Monica says it is. Sable figures out that she must have had the child while she was in Europe with Connie. Good thing for Connie she is not around. Sable is even more pissed when she learns that Connie and Arthur pretty much pawned off Monica’s child to Cash and Adrienne without telling Monica. Sable asks Monica about her feelings for Cash and Monica tells her that Cash loves her and she still loves him. We all know where this is going - Sable will make sure that Jason has his first born grandson.

But, it will not be so easy. Adrienne is determined to keep Scott, who still does not know the truth - but how long can it be kept for him. Even worse for Adrienne, Monica has forgiven Cash. The only good thing for Adrienne is that she does come from a well connected family and has the law on her side since she adopted Scott.

Jason is prepared to cancel his meeting with the Soviets to try to find Connie in India. Cash will have none of that. Besides, Jeff and Miles offer to go to India to find Connie. Just then Jason receives a call. It seems Connie and Hutch had chartered a plane the day before and have not returned. To make it even better, they never registered their itinerary so no one knows where they are. The lengths Connie will go to to avoid Sable’s wrath.

Memorable Dialogue

Sam: I think you’ll find this a little more substantial than money - a few shares in your uncle’s publishing company. [Hands Channing an envelope.] Go on.
Channing: My isn’t he generous. He could have just given me a toaster. Instead, he went whole hog and gave my a bribe. A bribe to keep me spying on Jason Colby for him.
Sam: You’re doing your uncle an injustice. Those shares are from the heart.
Channing: These big shares came from that teeny tiny place.

Sable: When will you stop acting so impulsively.
Miles: I wonder where I get it from.
Sable: Yes, you get it from me and look where we both are - outsiders in our home.

Sable: Damn that meddlesome old witch and damn you too. How could you give away my only grandchild and not even tell me. I’ll never trust you again.
Arthur: That’s exactly why you can trust me, because I can keep a confidence.

Sable: One way or another, I’m going to give Jason Colby his grandson. His first born grandson. And no one is going to stop me.
