the colbys episode 45 - “Return Engagement”
It looks like the wedding if off, or delayed, or whatever. Phillip claims that he has returned because of Connie’s death (Cecil’s death didn’t matter) but Jason believes he arrived to stop Jason from marrying Frankie. That is probably true but Phillip did not try to stop Frankie from marrying her two other husbands. Even though Jason does not trust Phillip, he reluctantly allows him to stay at the house (he is a Colby) and even promises to help Phillip get a position at Colby Enterprises.
Phillip may not need Jason’s help because Jeff is intending to give Phillip the voting stock that he received from Connie. Is Jeff crazy, again? He gave his Denver Carrington stock to Blake (who subsequently went bankrupt) and is now going to give his Colby Enterprises stock to Phillip. Jeff’s reasoning is that Connie only gave him the stock because she believed him to be Phillip’s son at the time and that Connie would have given it to Phillip. The reasoning is somewhat sound, but this is really stupid. Jason is not thrilled about it, to say the least, but Jeff seems determined to do so, for now.
Okay, let’s side track a moment for how Phillip got here. Even though Phillip was declared dead and they built a mausoleum for him in Denver (since Phillip and Cecil were both banished from the family), Phillip was actually held as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for more than 12 years. He and a comrade escaped to Laos but his comrade did not survive (that was probably Hoyt Parker) and Phillip eventually made it to Hong Kong and got into the export business. Of course, none of this explains why he stayed away for so long. Was it really because of the money he stole from Colby Enterprises (Phillip swears it was a loan). Whatever - all that matters is that Phillip is back.
In Morocco, Sable feels a sense of freedom now that she knows that Jason and Frankie are married. Sable even feels free to marry Zach. Hell, maybe she will do it in Morocco. Unfortunately for Zach, the phone rings - it is a call from Monica. Now that Sable has learned the wedding did not happen, she is determined to go back to Los Angeles. Looks like no wedding for Zach. Maybe Zach has finally hit his breaking point because he sends Sable back to Los Angeles alone. Further, Zach finds Adrienne drinking at the bar (what a surprise) and offers her some sort of alliance since they both have the same target - Sable Colby. Oh Zach, you may be going a bit too far here.
Sable is excited to see Phillip again. Maybe, just maybe she has found her opportunity to get Jason back. Over lunch, Sable assures Phillip that Jason and Frankie love each other and there is no way that Frankie has been carrying a torch for Phillip for all these years. Really? Frankie carried a torch for Jason that long so it cannot be that unbelievable.
The Soviets are determined to do anything to get Kolya to come back to Russia. They force Anna to call him and tells him that their mother is sick and is about to die. But, their mother is waiting to see Kolya before she dies. Kolya tells Anna that he will come to the Soviet Union right away. Anna is happy and tells him that their mother and Vanya (from the Chekov play?) will be waiting for them. Kolya knows that their mother is not sick and that Anna was being forced by the Soviets - she tipped Kolya off by mentioning Vanya who happened to be their imaginary playmate as children. The Soviets need to come up with a better scheme.
Stupid Channing should have disposed of her birth control pills better. Apparently, a member of the staff was rifling through the garbage and noticed Channing’s pills in the envelope. Enid gives the pills to Miles to give to Channing. Of course Enid did. Miles is pissed but he controls his rage with Channing as best as Miles can. He does confront Fallon in the elevator in Colby Enterprises and blames her for all of this because all Miles did was love her. Now that Channing is willing to have a child, she asks the doctor if it is possible. Duh? She told you it was last time. Channing asks for her help through this (again, go see a psychiatrist).
Channing is going to need more than the help of a doctor. Now that Channing is willing to have a child and get over her fears of child birth, she tells Miles that their miracle has come true. She saw the doctor again, they ran some test and it appears Channing can conceive a child. Miles finds that strange because they have been having all this sex and Channing hasn’t managed to get pregnant yet. See, here is the major hole in Channing’s plan, even if Miles was not aware of the birth control pills. But, Miles is aware and he shows them to Channing. Busted! (Seriously Channing, just tell Miles the truth)
No one has figured out that Phillip is also Hoyt Parker, but that may change. Jeff had sent Hoyt’s signature to his mother in Boise to see if there was a match. Hoyt’s mother sent back a letter from Hoyt and the signatures do not match. Jeff shows the two signatures to Jason (who is working late). Now, why bother showing it to Jason? It is a good thing Jeff did because Jason just happened to have a letter on his desk from Phillip when he was in Vietnam. The P in Phillip’s and Hoyt Parker’s signature are identical. Jason gets his men to find out all they can on Phillip and Hoyt regarding their activities in South East Asia following the Vietnam War.
Frankie is afraid to see Phillip and believes that he is dangerous. Really? Or is it that Frankie still has feelings for Phillip and cannot trust herself around him. Sable goads Frankie about her feelings for Phillip, but Frankie swears that she no longer has feelings for Phillip. With Jason working late, Phillip pays Frankie a visit in the pool house. Phillip tells Frankie about how he preferred the old pool house, where the two would be alone and make love. Frankie can’t resist and the two kiss (Frankie, you slut!). Sable, returning to her bedroom, looks over at the pool house and sees Frankie and a man she believes to be Jason kissing. But it is not Jason, and when Sable sees that it is Phillip, she is stunned. (Frankie, you slut!)
Memorable Dialogue
Sable: I was reborn the moment I knew Jason and Frankie were finally married - just as you predicted. I feel a sense of freedom, a release.
Jason: You came back to wreck my wedding. Didn’t you?
Phillip: Your wedding? You wrecked my marriage. Which is worse? You have a funny moral code.
Sable: I’m not disturbing you, am I?
Frankie: No, of course not.
Sable: My sister’s about to say I do when the groom’s dead brother, coincidentally the bride’s ex-husband, returns from the dead. No wonder you fainted. I would have shriveled up with embarrassment.
Frankie: You? I don’t think so.
Miles: My God, Fallon. All I did was fall in love with you. I have to be punished for it for the rest of my life.
Jason: It’s not the same. There is no going back.
Sable: No, of course not. And people don’t come back from the dead. Do they?
Adrienne: What makes you think I have a problem?
Zach: I think the saying goes - it takes one to know one. In my case, it’s Sable Colby.
Adrienne: Oh, yes. Well, it would be difficult not to have a problem with Mrs. Colby.
Frankie: Is it because I was going to marry Jason.
Phillip: Was?
Frankie: Am, am going to marry Jason.
