the colbys Episode 15 - “Burden of Proof”

The trial resumes, and Captain Holmes answers my question from the last episode - why did he perform a sterility test on Phillip? It appears that Phillip was depressed because he wanted a child but thought he was sterile, so he wanted a test. Wait. I guess that is an answer. Kind of stupid. How many young men in their early 20s worry about such things and ask for a test? Ah, who cares it is answer. Anyway, Holmes is certain that Phillip is sterile and cannot be Jeff’s father.

Gee, Frankie - just tell the truth

With that, Arthur recalls Frankie to the stand and asks a condescending question if she believes in miracles. Frankie continues to dodge. Finally, Arthur gets to the point (which he should have done with his first question) and asks if she slept with someone else, and who that person is. Who is Jeff’s father? Frankie wants to assure us that Jeff is a Colby so there is no need to answer that. That’s not good enough. Before Frankie finally breaks down and answers the question - Jason stands up and claims ownership.

Should Jeff really be surprised.

Should Jeff really be surprised.

As you would expect, everyone is shocked and the fallout begins. Sable storms home. Miles refuses to look up to his father anymore. Jeff drags Frankie off and chastises her for keeping the secret for so long. Frankie swears that she truly believed Phillip to be Jeff’s father. Now, did she really believe, or did she want to believe it? Granted, does it matter? In the least, Frankie had to have a strong inclination.

Miles probably has a good reason to be angry.

Jason returns to the mansion with the hope of speaking to Sable. Probably not a good idea. Before he can talk to Sable in her room, she is on the steps with an elephant gun pointed at Jason. Jason tries to convince her to put down the gun so as not to hurt anyone. Fortunately, the only one who gets hurt is a table that Sable accidentally shoots before running off to her room. Jason follows her, barges into the room and tries to talk to her. It was before Jason met Sable, blah blah blah. Jason was done once Sable asked him whether he loved Frankie. We all know the answer.

Sable is taking the news well.

Sable is taking the news well.

There is always Frankie for Jason. Jason decides to give her a call and asks her to come talk to him. Roger does not want Frankie to have anything to do with Jason, but that’s her baby daddy. Jason notes how beautiful Frankie is and somehow believes that this changes everything. Like the two will get back together. Frankie refuses to play along and leaves him. Then, why did Frankie defy Roger in the first place to go talk to Jason.

Later that evening, it is only Jason and Connie at dinner. Connie feels it is a good idea for her to speak to Sable. Is Connie crazy? As expected, it does not go well, with Sable noting that all Connie has ever done is to interfere. Connie pushes back that Sable brought this all on herself. I guess that is kind of true, but I am definitely more sympathetic to Sable in her fight with Connie. After her discussion with Connie, Sable goes to the gallery to ease her pain. Zach shows up and claims he knew that Sable would be there. Sure - he was definitely stalking her. Sable is okay with it and asks Zach to hold her.

I am sure Zach was hoping for more.

Before speaking with Sable, Connie speaks to Jeff, who is ready to leave Los Angeles. Connie tells him that he cannot leave and that he is needed there, especially for his brother, Miles, who has lost so much. What the hell is Connie smoking - she always seems to say and do the wrong thing, or at least the odd thing. How is Miles taking the news? Well, we all know what his reaction will be - erratic speeding in the mountains. This time, he flips his car, but is lucky to come out unscathed.

Geez. I wonder who is driving the car

Back to Jeff - who is speaking with Fallon in the guest house and wants to take Fallon away. For some reason, Fallon tells Jeff that he should stay in Los Angeles - that is where his family is. Fallon does not want to go back to Denver - that makes no sense. What also makes no sense, is that Fallon wants to stay in the guest house despite wanting to make love to Jeff. But, the two decided to wait until they are married. What the hell has happened to Fallon? Regardless, Jeff is not going to spend the night in the mansion with Jason - so he decides to go to the beach house. Jeff is afraid for Fallon’s safety and tells her to lock the door.

Jason is wasting no time.

Jason is wasting no time.

Gee, we know what that advice means - something creepy with Miles is going to happen. And sure enough it does. While Fallon is sleeping, Miles sneaks into the guest house and stares at Fallon sleeping before leaving her a note that says “Never Let You Go.” Why did Miles think this a good idea? [Seriously, so many bad ideas in this family.] Fallon is creeped out enough that she decides to join Jeff at the beach house when she wakes the next morning to the note.

Before we get to the predictable events at the beach house, let’s cover two quick points. 1.) Sable tells Bliss that she approves of her and Sean. Further, Sable does not think Zach is such a bad guy (I guess the embrace at the gallery helped). 2.) Monica tells Wayne that she wants him in Los Angeles and has cancelled his promotional tour. Wayne is pretty pissed about it, and rightfully so. But, Monica is a Colby, so we are to expect poor decision making.

Monica - why cancel the promotional tour?

Jeff is pleasantly surprised by Fallon’s appearance at the beach house. Fallon shows him the note from Miles. You would think the appropriate response to this would be to go back to Denver. Oh, but no. Regardless, Fallon wants to spend the day together. When Miles finally returns home, he wants to find Fallon. Bliss tells him that Fallon went to the beach house to be with Jeff. Not a great idea Bliss. Also, when Miles storms off, Bliss probably may have wanted to call and give Jeff and Fallon a heads up. Miles arrives at the beach house and taunts Jeff into a fight by calling Frankie a whore. [One day, I should compile a list of all the times Frankie is referred to as a whore on this show.] Miles lands a punch and Jeff goes tumbling down a cliff. Everyone freaks out.

Memorable Dialogue

Sable [to Jason]: You’ve killed me. You killed everything we had between us. Hurt somebody? You sanctimonious hypocrite.

Fallon: Miles, especially Miles. I’m really afraid for him.
Jeff: Afraid for him or afraid of him.
Fallon: Maybe both.

Bliss: And daddy doesn’t trust either of them.
Sable: Yes, when it comes to trust your father is hardly in a position to judge, is he?

Miles: After all, we are family now. Same father; different mother of course. Yours is the whore!
Jeff: Damn you!
Fallon: Don’t Jeff, it’s what he wants.
Jeff: He’s going to get it.
Miles: Try it. You’ll end up flat on your back. Like mother, like son.
