the colbys episode 23 - “Anniversary Waltz”
Apparently, Jason has nothing better to do that to keep listening to the audio tape of Sable and Zach. Maybe it is just me, but it seems every time he listens there is something even more incriminating on the tape that we have never heard before. Further, Jason is anguished over what to do with the tape. At one point he is willing to throw it out but decides to pocket it and deal with it later.
At breakfast with Frankie, Jason tries to tell her that he is ready to resolve matters with Sable, which I guess implies that he is going to use the tape to force Sable into a divorce settlement. Of course, Jason is unable to tell Frankie everything because Sable comes into the room (like always) and invites the two to a family dinner that night. Jason tries to convince Sable that it is not a good time but when Sable says it is for Jeff and Miles, Jason cannot help but attend. Frankie still claims to be a no and is unhappy with Jason that he always gives into Sable. They have been married for 29 years, what does Frankie expect.
The best part is that Sable really is not planning a family dinner that evening, but a surprise wedding anniversary party for her and Jason. Clearly, this is not the best idea in the world, but that does not stop Sable. Miles hopes that this will help bring his parents back together while Bliss thinks this is really a bad idea. And, if anyone know as anything about bad ideas, it is probably Bliss. More on that later.
Now that Jeff is in the clear, he decides to help clear Miles of his charges. He drags Miles into the garage where they pull out Miles’s tool kit, and wouldn’t you know it - the mallet is missing. But wait, there is a problem. At the time of Mahoney’s murder, Miles was driving a classic red Ferrari - the one he wrecked after being rejected by Fallon. The tools were in the car when they towed it away. The current set is a replacement. Ahhh, so now the Hardy Boys/Colby Brothers need to track down the original set of tools.
There is no way a junk yard is going to destroy a classic Ferrari and the woman at the junk yard tells the guys she sold it to some man name Fowler who lives 100 miles north of Los Angeles. She also flirts with Miles which is pretty awesome. Anyway, the Hardy Boys head up to Fowler’s ranch to see if he has the tools. Granted, this means Miles will be violating the terms of his bail, but he does not care. At Fowler’s ranch, the Hardy Boys find the tools that Miles owned at the time of Mahoney’s death, and, wouldn’t you know, the mallet is there. So, there is no way that the mallet that Moretti presented to the court was the murder weapon because it did not exist at the time.
Okay, now I am jumping the gun here as I am sure this will be resolved in the season finale - but how did someone get access to Miles’s new tools and just so happen to put the mallet in the water near where Mahoney was found? It would have had been weeks after Mahoney’s body was found so investigators went back into the water and found the mallet then. That is a pretty big piece of exonerating evidence. Garrett should have asked when the mallet was found. Oh well, things are looking much better for Miles and for the brotherly relationship between Miles and Jeff.
Let’s stick with the Colby children as both Monica and Bliss have developments in their love lives. Neil offers Monica a key to his apartment to show his commitment to her. He probably should have taken the picture of his wife out of the drawer before telling Monica to look in it to find the key. Still, Neil swears that things are over with his wife and he will tell her that he wants a divorce when she is next in town. Apparently, telephones don’t work. Also, maybe Monica should ask Frankie how well that works out.
Anyway, Neil is a little bit jealous of Wayne with whom Monica has a weird fascination. Monica can’t stop watching his lame music video. Monica assures Neil that she is just there to support Wayne and will tell him that she is not interested in the near future. There is no real need because as Neil and Monica kiss, Wayne walks in - ahhh the advantages of having sight. Wayne walks out and Monica catches up with him at Wayne’s home just as Wayne is about to explore the country now that he can see (btw, did Wayne ditch the seeing eye dog?). Wayne has no hard feelings and the two hug goodbye. It’s been nice knowing you Wayne.
I guess Bliss has a surfing hobby, so much so that is appears in the newspaper. Spiro sees the article and decides that is a good opportunity to stalk Bliss. This might be a good idea for Spiro since Bliss had just told Miles that she is through with boys and is ready to move onto men. And Spiro is definitely way older than Sean was. Spiro catches up with Bliss at the beach and convinces her to have lunch with him. I wonder what will happen after lunch.
Remember how the Colbys was kind of a show for Jeff and Fallon. We really have not seen much of Fallon lately - she must still be spooked by that fortune teller in Jamaica. Fallon happens to catch Connie who is about to go to San Francisco for a few days to see Hutch. Oh good, Hutch is back in the picture. Apparently, Connie thinks she has resolved the family issues that made her take a break from Hutch in the first place. Funny, I don’t think anything is resolved. Still, good for Connie. Oh yeah, Fallon. She was looking for Jeff because she has good news - she believes she is pregnant. She just needs to confirm it with the doctor. I am sure there will be no issues with this at all.
Jason decides he is going to confront Sable at the Colby Collection about the tape. Before Jason’s arrival, Zach is in Sable’s office where he once again invites her to spend the night with him, but this time on his yacht because his stepson is staying in the apartment. Sable assures Zach that she is getting back with Jason, but Zach leaves the invite open. Any hope of Jason catching the two is dashed as Zach leaves, but he does appear just in time to know Zach was in the office. Jason asks Sable why Zach was there and Sable swears it was just business. Jason is doing his best to control his anger and tells Sable they will discuss things after the dinner party.
Frankie changes her mind and decides to attend Sable’s dinner party but that requires her first riding home with Jason in the limo. Wait, why are the two of them riding together? Did Frankie just go to Jason’s office to apologize and say she trusts him? Jason assures Frankie that he will get the settlement from Sable and the two will be married in a week’s time. Even if Sable agreed to the settlement, it still takes months for the divorce to be finalized, unless he is flying off to Mexico (but you would not file such a divorce in Mexico). Frankie apologizes for being short earlier and realizes that the two must talk about Sable. Jason says he will tell the family tonight about the divorce and his plans to marry Frankie after the party. Frankie thinks it may be better to wait until the following day.
Well, of course Frankie and Jason enter the dark mansion together just to see everyone surprise Jason for the wedding anniversary. Here goes Frankie squirming again. One has to wonder what is actually going through Frankie’s mind through all of this. Is it really worth it? Sable and Jason have a history and three children together - and you had a one night stand 29 years ago (while married to Jason’s brother) that resulted in Jeff. And this cannot be said enough, she is your sister. Sable drags Jason onto the dance floor, but Jason appears to finally have had enough - he is going to tell Sable everything.
Jason drags Sable in the bedroom and plays the tape for Sable. Sable swears she never had sex with Jason because she loves Jason. Jason then tells her that he does not love her and loves Frankie. Sable, rightly, is pissed and rips into Jason and before storming off tells Jason that she would have slept with Zach had she known he was going to accuse her of it.
I wonder where Sable is going to go. Zach’s yacht of course. Zach is there to comfort Sable and to give her a gift. A dress that looks very similar to the one that Sable was taking off when Zach busted in on her all those years ago and for which Jason fired him. Zach wants to reenact that event but this time with a much better ending for Zach. Sable agrees and looks great in the dress. Zach slips her out of the dress and the two are about to make love but they hear someone on the boat. Zach gets his gun to see who it is.
Well, we all know that it is Jason. How did he end up there? After Sable storms off, Monica catches up with Jason and drags him to the library where Jeff and Miles explain how Miles was also set up. Jason is convinced that Zach is behind all of this and is prepared to settle the score with Zach. Jason goes to Zach’s penthouse but only finds Spiro who tells him that Zach is on his yacht. Jason is so determined to find Zach that he did not even know that Bliss was in the bedroom. Good for Spiro.
Jason confronts Zach on the boat but slips up by noting that Zach is stealing his wife. Zach jumps on that, pulls a gun and tells Jason to leave because he is trespassing. Jason decides that reaching for the gun is a better idea. The two struggle and Jason is able to get the better of Zach and get his gun. Just at that time, Sable comes up. Jason’s is distracted and Zach reaches for the gun. The gun goes off and down goes Sable. Jason hovers over Sable’s bloody head as Zach tells him that he has killed his wife. Happy Anniversary!
Memorable Dialogue
Sable [to Jason]: Oh what a waste my life has been. 29 years of loving you and you loved her all the time. A wee pathetic. A wife without a husband and a husband without the guts to let her know. If I had known I’d been blamed for it anyway, I would have slept with Zach and loved every minute of it, laughing at you.
Zach: Your wife? That’s it. Your pride is wounded. Jason Colby brought to this - hurt, humiliated and looking for justice. [Pulls out a gun.] Look into this gun - this is justice.
