the colbys episode 25 - “The gathering storm”
Sable really has gotten herself into quite the bind. At least she was able to stop Jason and Frankie from flying off so Jason can get a divorce and marry Frankie. But, now what? Does Sable really believe that she can continue with the story that Jason tried to kill her on Zach’s yacht and then later beat her? And what are the children going to think? Bliss swears that if her mother is lying to her she will never forgive her. Sable pretty much tells Miles that she is lying and Miles does promise to support her but hopes she will just let Jason go.
What about Monica? Oh that’s right - she crashed her plane in the mountains. Fortunately, Monica is rescued by a ranger before she was engulfed in flames. Now, if the plane crashed because it had run out of fuel, where did the fire come from. Hmmm . . . But why think about that, when I can ponder where the little stream of blood on Monica’s face came from or why the ranger did not bring Monica to the hospital or get her medical attention. No, he brings her back to his station where she spends the night because she does not want to tell anyone that she crashed the airplane. She sure did miss a lot. In any event, the next day, Monica does contact Miles and he goes to pick her up.
We will get back to Sable’s predicament in a moment. Let’s get into Fallon’s predicament. Fallon does not know who is the father of her baby and it is weighing on her conscious. The night she and Jeff go to celebrate the news, they run into Miles. Fallon does not want to tell Miles the good news, but Jeff convinces her that they should. Miles puts on a brave front but does not suspect he may be the father. Fallon is so bothered by this that she goes to the bathroom to call the doctor’s office to set up an appointment for the following day. Who knew the doctor’s office would be open that late or that Dr. Waverly could see Fallon the following day?
Fallon tells Dr. Waverly that either Miles or Jeff could be the father of her child since she slept with both of them within a few weeks (one willingly, the other not - but Fallon does not mention the rape). These are the days before DNA tests, by Dr. Waverly informs Fallon that they can perform some sort of tissue test that can conclusively tell who is not the father. I wonder if that would work if the two potential fathers are half brothers (maybe it will because they have different mothers). However, Dr. Waverly does not recommend performing the test until the child is born which will be in about seven months. The pregnancy is too risky to perform an amniocentesis. Besides, the season has just begun, and we need to drag out this storyline for a while.
For some reason, Fallon tries to get Frankie’s advice on this without actually telling Frankie what is the issue. Frankie talks about it is best to be honest and all because she wasn’t and it has hurt so many people (not that it is stopping her from continuing to hurt people). Fallon calls Jeff and tells him to wake her when he gets home, no matter how late, because she needs to talk to him. Is Fallon really going to tell him the truth? Besides, Jeff has heard this story before.
Before Miles sees Fallon and Jeff, he happens to catch the eye of a woman who is reading a magazine -Modern Design - at the bar. Who doesn’t read at the bar? Miles is so smitten that he follows her to the elevator and even stops it so he can talk more to this mysterious woman. The mysterious woman - who Miles dubs Miss 702 because of her room number - isn’t going to fall for this. But, this mystery woman is on a mission. When she returns to her room, she pulls out a series of folders - one labeled for Jeff, Miles and Francesca. Why Francesca? And why is the folder labeled Francesca Colby? She' isn’t married to Philip anymore, hasn’t married Jason yet, and hasn’t dropped her other married names. She really isn’t known as Francesca Colby, but Francesca Hamilton Langdon. Maybe she dropped the Langdon. Pretty positive she did not take back her maiden name - Scott. Okay, I am digressing.
We all see where this storyline is going. Now, if we were paying attention (and also if we did not know who this mysterious woman is), we could figure out how Miles and Miss 702 will cross paths again. Before seeing her lawyer, Sable tries to cancel an appointment with an individual from Modern Design magazine (the same magazine that Miss 702 is reading in the hotel bar). Hmmm . . . Later, Miles returns home and learns there is a persistent reporter waiting. Miles goes to get rid of them, just to realize it is the same person he had trapped in the elevator the previous night.
Miles, actually showing some intelligence, figures that none of this is a coincidence. But, then he gets stupid again, when the mysterious woman, Channing Carter (we can finally say it) pretends that she does not know who Miles is and that she was there to see Sable. Wait, Miles is actually going to believe that Channing has no clue who he is. I mean she is an editor of a magazine that is about to do a spread on the Colby Collection and mansion, Miles had been in the news for that murder charge and is pretty well known. Maybe Miles was just so taken by Channing to realize that he is being played. Regardless, Miles invites Channing to dinner.
Okay, now we can return to the Sable/Jason/Frankie saga. Frankie is incensed by what Sable is doing that she decides that she will wake Sable from her sleep and force her to call Moretti to tell the truth. Sable throws the phone instead and lets Franke know that now she has to learn how to keep Jason. Jason, meanwhile, is released on bail after Moretti concedes that Sable has not claimed to still be threatened by Jason. So, what does Jason do when he gets out of jail? He tries to manhandle Sable to tell the truth! That is the smart thing. There are moments when it looks like Sable may actually tell the truth, but then Jason ruins it by saying that he does not love her, but he loves Frankie. It has been 29 years Jason, can’t you play it off for a few more months?
Sable goes to speak to her lawyer, Arthur Cates, about the situation. Basically, Arthur tells her that it is her word against Jason’s. A bigger problem for Sable is that Zach has already told the police that the shooting was an accident. Sable decides she will finally whore herself to Zach to get him to change his story. Why does Sable think this will work? Why would Zach try to help Sable get Jason back? And, Zach tells Sable so after they have sex. If Sable is going to try to pin an attempted murder and assault charge on Jason, she is on her on. Good luck with that Sable.
Oh yeah, I guess we are to assume that Frankie and Jason slept together the same night that Zach and Sable did. Gross.
Memorable Dialogue
Sable: Well, it appears you won’t be flying off with my husband after all. I suppose you’ll be wanting a ride back into town in my car.
Frankie: No, thank you. I’d rather walk.
Sable: Of course, it’s more your style, isn’t it? Walking the streets?
Frankie: You deserve a bruise for that. Luckily, somebody has saved me the trouble.
Sable: You’ll never get him.
Frankie: I’ve already got him. Thanks to you.
Sable: I see. Then all you have to do is keep him. Isn’t it?
Jason: Let me say this one more time. I don’t love you. I love Frankie and I intend to marry her. You can’t change that. Nothing can change that.
Sable: Then you can rot in jail.
