the colbys episode 31 - “Bloodlines”
Jason is not a stupid man and has figured out that Monica and Cash had had an affair in the past. That was the married man Monica spoke to him about. Well, Jason will not allow Cash to be around his daughter or the I.M.O.S. Project. He will get the boys in Washington (and let’s be real, at the time, it was almost all boys) to have Cash removed. [Now that Jason is determined to have Cash removed, Zach will run interference to make sure Cash stays and even tries to recruit Cash to help him muscle his way onto I.M.O.S. - good luck with that Zach.] Monica has had a change of heart and now has not problem working with Cash. What? Further, she does not want Jason to force Cash out because of her - Monica claims she has things under control. Does she?
Does anyone have things under control? Sable does not like the fact that Miles and Channing are already sleeping in separate bedrooms. Miles is upset that Channing did not tell him sooner that she could not have children. When was there time to tell him? Channing explains to Miles what had happened. Channing was raped as a teenager, had an abortion and the abortion resulted in an infection that has left her barren. I really want to believe Channing, but she makes it so difficult especially since we know she was traumatized by seeing her mother die during labor. Later, we learn that Channing is on the pill. Granted, there are medical reason a woman may be on the pill that have nothing to do with birth control. Still, it is difficult to completely believe Channing.
Instead of taking a few episodes for Sable to find out the truth, Miles just tells Sable that Channing cannot have children. Sable is devastated for Miles because Miles always wanted children. Sable is also devastated because it puts a kink in her plan to get Miles on the Board of Colby Enterprises. Jason had no problem giving Sable a seat on the Board, so it is more imperative for Sable to get Miles on the Board. Sable tries to use Miles’ misfortune to push Jason to put Miles on the Board, but Jason, seeing through Sable, refuses. Heck, if Sable really wants Miles on the Board, she should give him her seat.
Sable is still determined. She speaks with Channing and Channing tells her the story. Sable, wisely, believes that Channing should seek a second opinion on the matter. Oh Channing, it looks like you may be busted. Channing agrees to see Dr. Waverly - Fallon’s OB/GYN - who tells Channing that her abortion only left some scarring and she is perfectly capable of having a child. Don’t tell Channing something she already knows. Channing pretty much tells Dr. Waverly that she has no intention of ever having a child and will abort if she ever gets pregnant. Further, Dr. Waverly better not say anything to Miles or Sable. Ethically, Dr. Waverly can’t tell them anyway - doctor-patient confidentiality.
Jason, Cash and Monica fly out to Washington. Jason leaves Monica and Cash alone which gives Cash the opportunity to grab Monica’s hand to talk about their past love. Wait, isn’t Cash’s wife in D.C.? Why yes she is, because Adrienne, Cash’s wife, enters the restaurant and we know that she knows what had happened between Monica and Cash in the past. Further, it appears that Cash and Adrienne have a secret of their own because Adrienne asks Cash if Monica knows everything and Cash says she does not.
Oh, and the secrets are not done. Later, just as Monica is about to return to Los Angeles, Adrienne pays her a visit. It seems many years ago, Adrienne and Monica made a deal that Monica was not to see Cash ever again. Monica assures Adrienne that she has no intention of picking up with Cash where they left off. That is not entirely reassuring to Adrienne but that does not matter because she has changed her plans and will be joining Cash in Los Angeles much sooner than anticipated. This should be fun.
Kolya and Bliss try to carry on while evading the watchful eye of Sasha. They are clearly not doing a great job. Kolya feels suffocated by Sasha and keeps talking about freedom. Oh no. We all see where this is going. Kolya has a taste for American freedom (and rich American blonds) and it will be hard for him to go back to the Soviet Union. Ahhh, classic Cold War story from the Western perspective. At least Bliss seems happy.
Frankie still feels useless and really wants that Chief of Protocol position on the I.M.O.S. Project. Yes, it is a made up position. And yes, Jason, really does not want to give it to her. He would rather give her jewelry and have her play mistress of the house. Frankie eventually proves her worth by showing Jason that his seating arrangement for a dinner party for those on the I.M.O.S. Project would be a disaster. How many times are we going to hear that Frankie was this excellent wife of a diplomat? It looks like the I.M.O.S. Project has a new Chief of Protocol. Frankie is still useless though
As expected, Fallon is not happy with Jeff’s behavior regarding Miles. If Jeff keeps it up, Miles is finally going to figure out the truth. No one can know. Well, that is until Fallon decides to confide in Frankie. To be fair, if you are pregnant and are not sure who the father is between two brothers, Frankie is the person with whom to speak. She does have experience with that.
Meanwhile, there is no need for Miles to figure this out, because Sable will. Sable notices that everyone seems to be acting strange with respect to the baby. Fallon is acting weird, Jeff fights Miles over a toy, and Frankie refuses to gloat about the baby. Would Frankie have gloated if she was certain that Jeff was the father? Probably not. Regardless, Sable is going to find out what is going on. As luck would have it, the answer falls into the lap. As everyone expected, Sable asks Dr. Waverly about Channing. Dr. Waverly pretty much tells Sable that Channing is probably not going to have children - an actual clever response by Dr. Waverly to protect doctor-patient confidentiality. Then, Dr. Waverly ruins it by slipping that Fallon is five months pregnant. When Sable corrects her that it is four, Dr. Waverly remembers that she was supposed to say it was only four. Sable is almost at the truth, and she confirms her suspicion by snooping into Fallon’s medical file to see that the paternity of the baby is unknown and a paternity test is not recommended at this time. Sable is giddy with the prospect that Miles may be a father after all.
Memorable Dialogue
Miles; I’ve told you - my marriage is private.
Sable: Nothing is private when you’re a Colby.
Anna: Kolya, where are you going?
Kolya: Some place where I can break free. I’m suffocating.
Jason: First, you insist on family stock in the divorce settlement. Then you want a seat on the Board or you’ll stall the settlement.
Sable: Well, that has nothing to do with our son. I care about his future.
Jason” His future or yours? You’ll be on the Board, and Monica - now Miles. You’re trying to turn my Boardroom into a three ring circus and you want to be ring master.
Jeff: Good evening, Sable.
Sable: Well, in between temper tantrums, are we?
Sable: Something’s not right. Jeff hits Miles over a toy for the baby, Fallon looks positively haunted and Frankie won’t even discuss the baby. Something’s going on, they’re not telling me about. Well, I should just have to find out for myself, won’t I.
