the colbys episode 34 - “bid for freedom”
I know everyone has been waiting for this moment - an episode centered around Bliss. Bliss is upset and has been crying all night because she can no longer see Kolya. She loves him, wants to marry him (why waste time) and is even willing to go back to Russia with him. Jason acts as if he is helpless to do anything - Kolya and Bliss are from two separate worlds. The Soviets will keep them apart, Jason is just trying to prevent future heartbreak. Sable wants Jason to do more and chastises him for giving up so easily.
Everyone is doing their part to keep Kolya and Bliss apart, including Sasha. Still, Sasha for some reason permits Kolya and Bliss to have lunch together. Sasha interrupts the lunch to send Kolya back to rehearsal. He then tells Bliss that Kolya and Anna will be sent back to the Soviet Union, they do not know it yet and there is nothing that Bliss can do about it. Why tell Bliss this? I mean if you are not going to tell, why give Bliss 24 hours notice so she can try to come up with something to stop this. Of course we know that Bliss has no clue how to stop it, but she tries to recruit her parents to stop the Soviets from sending Kolya and Bliss back.
Sable does have an interest in keeping Kolya in the United States since he is the star performer of her new dance group. Jason acts helpless while lecturing Bliss on the evils of the Soviet system. Having Sable and Bliss beg for help finally gets to Jason who speaks with the Soviet consulate for an hour, but to no avail. He then talks to someone from U.S. Immigration who informs Jason that Kolya could defect. Defect is a nice way of saying he can try to seek asylum. All Kolya has to do is tell a U.S. Immigration official that he will be persecuted at home and wishes to seek asylum in the United States. Oh, it is so simple. Why didn’t any of these people think of this in the first place? Of course, it will not be so simple.
Zach is still bewildered why Sable wants to spend a few days in Brussels. Sable unconvincingly tells Zach that Brussels can be romantic. Sable comes clean and tells Zach that Jason is having his secret meeting with the Soviets regarding I.M.O.S. in Brussels, and now Zach can have his ear to the wall. Zach wonders if Sable is helping Zach or wanting to be close to Jason. It is probably a little of both.
Even more obvious is Miles inviting Channing to the Colby Lodge for some skiing in the mountains. Why would Miles invite her? Because he knows Jeff and Fallon are going there. Miles, for some strange reason, believes Jeff and Fallon are going to the lodge so Fallon can fake a skiing accident to lose the baby. Like Jeff would let Fallon ski? Further, can that really cause a miscarriage? Even though Jeff and Fallon leave first for the lodge, Miles and Channing are able to get there before them, settle in and even make snow angels.
Miles acts surprised when Jeff and Fallon arrive, but no one is buying it, especially Channing. Miles pretty much fesses up which annoys everyone. Jeff and Fallon are prepared to leave, but wouldn’t you know it, it is beginning to snow and there was a snow slide that is blocking the highway for at least 24 hours. Strange how people always seem to get stuck in the mountains. Why even go? Fortunately, the place is big enough for the four of them. Later that night, Channing and Jeff have a moment, where Channing does pose the ultimate question - what will happen to everyone if Miles is the father of the baby?
Monica seems to have an instant connection to Scott - I wonder why. When Monica just happens to have an opportunity to see a rocket launch, she tells Cash to invite Scott along. Even though Scott already has plans to visit a museum with Adrienne, Cash tells Monica that he and Scott would love to go. Common sense would be to invite Adrienne along too, but Cash really does have some secret desire to ditch Adrienne, take Scott and raise him with the child’s natural mother. Adrienne is not stupid despite Cash swearing that will never happen.
Adrienne goes to Jason to see what he can do to get Cash kicked off the IMOS project. Once again, Jason acts as if he is helpless. Jason claims that he wanted Cash off the project and that his desire had nothing to do with Monica (that’s a lie) but the boys in Washington want Cash on the project and he cannot do anything about it. Adrienne ominously warns Jason that this will not turn out well.
On the private Colby jet returning from the rocket launch, Monica, Cash and Scott make a cute family. Scott even hugs Monica again. We all know what Cash is thinking. When he sends Scott to the cockpit, he is about to tell Monica the truth. To be fair, Monica deserves to know the truth but this might not be the best setting and Adrienne should be involved. Wouldn’t you know it, Scott is not allowed in the cockpit during the landing so Cash cannot tell Monica the truth at this moment. I am sure Monica will never bring it up again.
Sasha is ready to defect and wants Anna to join him - their mother will understand. You would think that defecting would be easier, especially since Kolya and Anna are already in Los Angeles. It’s not like they have to scale the Berlin Wall. Sable tries her best to see Kolya, and then gets Zach to stall Sasha while Jason arrives. What is Jason going to do? Meanwhile, Kolya punches his escort and tries to run with Anna. They are chased throughout the hotel. One guard catches Anna and brings her to the car to send her to the airport. Jason claims he cannot stop that, but immigration comes rushing in to prevent the car from leaving. It looks like Anna is safe. As for Kolya, he is with Bliss and they run into his hotel room. Sasha is banging on the door for Kolya to surrender. Kolya has a better idea, he is going to jump off the balcony. I don’t think ballet stars should be doing that. Also, the drop seems pretty far even though his room number suggests they are only on the second floor.
It may not be the Berlin Wall but Kolya is going to jump from something while Bliss shrieks in horror. What people won’t do for freedom.
Memorable Dialogue
Sable: What have you done for her?
Jason: Hope I saved her from a disastrous love affair.
Sable: Well, if anyone knows about disastrous love affairs, it is you.
Jason: You can’t change the Soviet system.
Bliss: Maybe not, I can’t even change you.
Jason: Oh Rabbit, I know you are mad at me. If you really think I’m balanced about even on the moral scale with the Soviet Government, you’ve got a lot to learn about those people. I wish to God you didn’t have to find it out.
Sable: No, no, no. You don’t understand - I demand to know what you intend to do with the Rostovs.
Sasha: You’ll have to find your daughter another toy, Mrs. Colby. I’m shipping this one back to Moscow.
