the colbys episode 43 - “Fallon’s Baby”
Fortunately, the medical problem with the baby is not a drawn out affair. In a few days time, the baby is fine and the issue again is the paternity. Miles truly believes this is his baby. He swears he can see it in the baby’s eyes (which is odd since the baby never seems to open her eyes) and feels it in his gut. Jason warns Miles about being too invested - this baby could be Jeff’s. Even though Jason does not say so to Miles, he does wish Jeff to be the father. And, truth be told, Jason is not wrong. It would be a lot better for everyone (other than Sable) if Jeff is the father. Miles and Channing can adopt. Or, truth be told, Channing is not going to be Miles’s husband for life. He can find another vessel for his Colby blood.
Channing, meanwhile, tries to make amends with Fallon but Fallon wants nothing to do with Channing. Really, what is Fallon’s problem? The conflict seems so contrived. Jeff sees the confrontation between Fallon and Channing and Fallon tells Jeff her problem with Channing. Jeff later confronts Channing and tells her to stay away from Fallon. Jeff, as self-righteous as ever, tells Channing that she never wanted the child and has said so. I guess Jeff must have forgotten his thoughts of Fallon aborting the child. At least Miles stands up for Channing this time and lays into Jeff about his scolding of his wife. Jeff also swears he will talk to L.B. about whether he left the marbles. (We will see if that happens.)
Sable really wants Miles to be the father. More importantly, she wants Monica to take custody of Scott, especially after what she learns about Adrienne. Besides being a drunk and a pill popper, Adrienne has attempted suicide in the past. Sable truly believes that Adrienne is an unfit mother and wants to use that information against her. Cash will have nothing to do with that - he will not allow the adopted mother of his child to be trashed. Monica also is not game because she fears that she will lose this battle and lose Scott again. Monica cannot take that pain. Can they stop Sable? Are you new?
Further, Sable believes it is imperative to strike before Adrienne takes Scott back to Washington D.C. Sable not only snoops around the Colby mansion, she snoops around the hospital and interrupts Adrienne telling Cash that if they get a divorce he will never see Scott again, and Monica never will regardless. Apparently, joint custody did not exist in the 1980s. It is as if either Adrienne or Cash can have Scott - they both cannot have him if they get a divorce.
Cash puts the breaks on his divorce to Adrienne after her threats and his man-to-man discussion with Scott where Scott tells his father that he will be better and that he does not want his parent’s to split. Cash tells Monica who fears she is going to lose it all again, but Cash promises Monica that he will make sure that the three of them will be family. How? Since no one has considered joint custody. Also, it is better to resolve this before Sable becomes more involved.
Even though Fallon’s baby is still in critical condition, Jason wants to proceed with his wedding to Francesca. Even Fallon tells Frankie that they should continue - baby or no baby, life goes on. Maybe Frankie is having butterflies but she questions Jason about his feelings for Sable. Jason assures Frankie that he only feels anger toward Sable, which is exactly what Frankie fears. Jason will never be able to quit Sable. Further, what is going to happen with Sable when they actually get married? Is she still going to live in the mansion? Jason assures Frankie that Sable knows she cannot stay? Frankie is not buying such assurances and you can’t blame her since Sable is still at the mansion and has no intention of leaving. Maybe it will be time for another fainting spell.
Of course Sable could find a new place to live if she would just accept Zach’s proposal. Problem solved. Sable still is not ready to commit. Why does Zach keep pushing the issue? Yes, Sable still has feelings for Jason and she probably does want to get back with him, but she always seems to find herself at Zach’s penthouse. Zach, you got Sable, just be patient. You have waited 28 years for Sabella and now she will be filthy rich. Still, Zach’s patience can last only so long.
Bliss and Kolya actually show some concern for Fallon’s baby. Kolya takes Bliss to an Orthodox Church and they light a candle and say a prayer for Fallon’s baby. Back at Kolya’s apartment, Bliss suggests that she could be married with Kolya and the two could live together alone, away from the Colby mansion. This is all moving too fast for Kolya who is not used to his freedom. He is also not used to the idea of Bliss just moving in. Unlike the Soviet Union, there are no waiting lists for apartments in the United States - clearly Kolya has not checked out the apartment scene in New York City.
Unfortunately for Hoyt, there is no DVD of the first season of The Colbys or the internet for him to research the Colby family. He has to go to the microfilm room of the newspaper where he reads articles regarding Jason. He shows particular interest in the paternity hearing regarding Jeff - it was good. A woman employee tells Hoyt that she knows everything about the Colbys and even attended the paternity hearing for a few days. Why pour through old articles when Hoyt can just pick this woman’s brain for the information he wants?
Both Jeff and Zach are trying to get in touch with Hoyt - for different reasons, of course. Jeff has better luck as Hoyt told Immigration and Nationalization Services where he was staying in Los Angeles - the Rossmore Arms Hotel. I did not realize that INS took this information for person’s entering with a U.S. Passport (assuming Hoyt used an American passport) or that they actually write it down. Anyway, Jeff rushes to the hotel but, wouldn’t you know it, Hoyt had just checked out. What a coincidence. Jeff does pay the concierge a couple hundred dollars for a photocopy of Hoyt’s signature (not sure what good that will do).
Remember that discussion of stopping Sable - well it seems she got Arthur to draw up some custody papers for Monica. I am not sure why this is any of Sable’s business. Also, I am not sure why Arthur informed Jason about it. Jason, who clearly has nothing better to do, confronts Sable and advises her that the more she tries to manipulate their children, the more they will pull away which will leave her alone.
Finally, we learn the paternity of Fallon’s baby. Clearly, the test took more that 48 hours. Just to make the results more dramatic, the doctor hands the results to Jeff and Miles who read it together. Miles is devastated and Jeff is elated. It is Jeff’s baby, which really is the best for everyone.
Memorable Dialogue
Cash: Adrienne, can’t we at least part friends.
Adrienne: No, we can’t. I’m giving you your freedom, isn’t that enough?
Cash: And Scott?
Adrienne: Everything has its price.
Cash: What do you mean?
Adrienne: You can rip our marriage apart but you are not taking that child. If I have my way, you’ll never see him again and I can guarantee you Monica won’t, if it takes a court order.
Sable: I don’t care if Adrienne’s name is on the adoption papers. Scott is my flesh and blood.
Monica: My God, mother. How did you get to be the principal player in this?
Jason: Sable, you are not God. You don’t know what’s best for everyone.
Jason: Darling, she just lives in my house. You live in my heart.
Frankie: No, I live in your pool house and you camp out here with me like a live-in lover. Is a wedding going to change that?
Jason: Yes, of course. She’s got to leave. She knows that.
Jason: That’s over. All I feel for her now is anger.
Frankie: That’s what bothers me. The opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s indifference. You’re surely not indifferent to her. I wonder if you ever will be.
