dynasty Episode 163 - The Birthday
Since the producers have decided to use stock footage of Blaisdel 1 from the first season, I am confused as to what exactly is going on at Dex's work site. I thought he was building the pipeline, but it seems they are doing some oil drilling on the side. Whatever, it is at this site that Sammy Jo goes to get Clay to sign the annulment papers. Clay reluctantly signs even though he is still very much attracted to Sammy Jo. Besides, at least Clay is straight. That is not enough for Sammy Jo who just wants to end things with Clay. Good move, it was destined to fail from the start.
Now, I do not get what kind of relationship Steven and Sammy Jo want. They both love Danny and it has finally brought them together, even more so than when they were married. Amazing what happened as soon as Steven dropped his antagonism towards Sammy Jo. There really is no development in the relationship between the two other than shots of Jack Coleman posing as he seems concerned about Sammy Jo's problems.
Steven is not the only happier Carrington son. Adam finally uses his key to break into Dana's apartment to play an instrumental version of Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love of All". Adam is lucky that Dana does not have a gun. Dana wants nothing to do with Adam until he lets it slip that he wants to propose to her. That changed Dana's tune real quickly as she readily accepts. Now, Adam needs to tell his mother.
Surprisingly, Alexis is excited for Adam and Dana. What? What has happened to Alexis? She has gone soft. Granted, Dana is not the butler's daughter (sorry, majordomo). When Alexis learns that Dana has no family, she notes that they should be even more supportive. What? Again, what happened to Alexis in Singapore. Regardless, Alexis finds the upcoming nuptials of Dana and Adam as an opportunity to plan a huge wedding for the two. And guess where Alexis would like to have that wedding? The Carrington mansion, of course.
Since Alexis and Blake are pals now, Blake is cool with the idea although he is apprehensive Krystle will be to have Alexis planning the wedding in her home. No worry, Blake will talk to Krystle and everything will work out fine. Heck, Blake resolved the issue with the portrait. He returned it to Alexis and agreed to visit it anytime he wishes. This rapprochement between Blake and Alexis is pretty boring.
Blake is all about mending fences. He wants to get Leslie and Ben together after the disastrous night at the mansion. Blake tracks Leslie down at the Carlton and talks to her about giving Ben a chance. Leslie is being stubborn and who does that remind Blake of? Amanda. No, remember we are never to mention her name again. It reminds him of Fallon. (I know, didn't Amanda remind Blake of Fallon also.) Blake finally does convince Leslie to come to the mansion for dinner. Leslie gets along swimmingly with Krystle and Krystina. It may take a little time for Leslie and Ben to reconcile but at least they are moving in the right direction. Hell, even Krystle is vouching for Ben. Will wonders never cease.
I guess Nick found a new job because he has an oil rig of his own. Dominique goes out there to pay a visit to Nick and the rig, which he has named Dominique 1. Dominique envisions there being many more rigs across the land and is willing to front the money. Nick's pride prevents him from accepting the arrangement (look at the success of Lex-Dex), and Dominique storms off with the claim that Nick would not accept her money because she refused to sleep with him.
Just as Nick and Dominique get into it - there is no hope of reconciliation between Alexis and Dex. Dex is still jealous of Alexis's feelings for Blake. Dex is not happy about Alexis planning Adam's wedding because he sees it as an opportunity for her to move closer to Blake. Dex storms off and as he drives, he happens to see Dominique trying to change a flat tire. A word of advice, Dominique, you can at least take off your fur vest to change the tire.
Dominique gets Dex to change the tire for her, and the two head over to some roadside bar where people seemed to be dressed very well. I have never worn a suit to a bar, let alone a bar off the side road. Then again, this bar served Dominique white wine in a clean wine glass. The two talk about their loneliness. The conversation returns to Dex's trailer (and Dominique is still wearing that fur). You can see the spark between the two but Dominique claims she would never sleep with Dex even if it would piss off Alexis.
No actual need for Dominique to sleep with Dex to piss off Alexis. As the two are holding each other as friends, Alexis barges in with papers dissolving Lex-Dex (she was tired of Dex's continually hot temper) and believes the two are romantically linked. Alexis storms off, but not after calling Dominique a tramp.
With all that out of the way, we can turn to the main focus of the episode - Krystina and her upcoming third birthday. Since Krystina is so excited about her party, everyone is concerned that she gets plenty of rest. In fact, all we ever see is everyone trying to get Krystina to sleep. Who knew how simple it is to raise a three year old. Things look ominous as Krystina starts to have a breathing fit after an attempt to get her to sleep - but no one saw that.
Later, when Blake and Krystle are in Krystina's room, Krystina begins to have another fit and she is rushed to the hospital. The doctor wants to keep Krystina hospitalized for observation until they can figure out what is wrong with her. That's cool because Krystina will get two birthday parties - one in the hospital and the other at home once she is released.
Krystina has a cute party in her hospital room even if Hilda and Gerard are the only other guests besides Blake and Krystle. Krystina does get a rocking horse but Blake won't let her ride it because she needs, guess, to sleep. Nothing will stop Krystina from riding that horse. In the middle of the night, and with Krystle and Blake asleep in the room, Krystina wakes up and rides the horse until she has another attack and is unable to breath. See Krystina, you should have listened to your father. The episode ends with Krystle holding her lifeless daughter.
Memorable Dialogue
Alexis: Well, I came out here to apologize.
Dex: Well, that gives you a lot of options - a hell of a lot.
Alexis: Dominique - from lounge lizard to trailer tramp. Now I have seen everything.
